Adult Halloween Costumes and beyond - Playful Party Ideas

September 13th, 2008

Are you thinking of throwing a Monster Mash for the adult set? If so, look no further. We want to share our four favorite Halloween ideas to get the party hopping. From party tips and tricks to adult Halloween costumes with flare, we have all you need to make your party a real smash.

Smoking Party Drinks

From fruity creations to Martinis ala James Bond, add a smidge of dry ice to your party drinks for a spooky, smoking effect. Make sure you purchase food grade dry ice for safety and be sure to handle with care. For an extra special touch, hot glue a plastic spider to the stems of your glasses.

Adult Halloween Costumes

If you are the party host, work it out! If you are a woman, choose a witch costume and add unexpected touches to make your costume uniquely you. If you are a man, opt for a wizard costume. It will add to your party’s decor and help set the mood for a wonderful night.

Spooktacular Decor

Instead of orange pumpkins, choose white pumpkins this year. There is something more grown up and sophisticated about these pumpkins. They also put off a brilliant glow when made into Jack-o-lanterns.

The Monster Kissing Booth

We love this idea! Place your guests inside of the Monster Kissing Booth for a playful game of Kiss the Monster. Set up a make shift booth and create a sign out of particleboard. Paint on “wood planks” and then, spell out “Free Kisses”. This works best if you paint on your words imperfectly.

With just a few simple touches and a dash of imagination, you can turn your party into the envy of the boo-lock. So what are you waiting for? Let’s party!

Halloween Bird Watching - The Dark Side

April 21st, 2008

Bird watching is just about the most unobjectionable hobby in
the world. With Halloween approaching, however, it is time to
discuss the dark, dark, dark side of birding.

Bird watching enthusiasts are always looking for good spots to
whip out the binoculars and visually hunt for a new life bird.
There are really only two potential downsides to this for bird
watchers.

What Are You Looking At?

For backyard birding, one runs the risk of neighbors thinking
you are a pervert of some type trying to look in their windows
with your binoculars. This can usually be overcome by spreading
the word in the neighborhood that you’re an avid birder and the
binoculars are not pointing at anyone’s windows. Really.

If this doesn’t work, invite the offended neighbors over to do
some watching. They will either grow bored and leave or get
hooked. Either way, you’ll benefit and no longer have to deal
with negative gossip.

Buffy the Bird Watcher

Cemeteries! Not just for demons, vampires and Buffy the Vampire
Slayer!

A nasty little secret in the bird watching world is the fact
cemeteries are good places to bird watch. Generally, the
cemetery is quite, has lots of trees and hunters typically
aren’t bold enough to have a go at the fowl. In short, a perfect
place for birds to congregate and you to watch.

Now, it goes without saying that bird watching in a cemetery
requires a certain etiquette. First, the staff at the cemetery
may have a “get the hell off the property” policy towards
birding enthusiasts. This can quickly be overcome by explaining
that uncle/aunt [look at closest grave stone] was an avid bird
watcher and you are bringing their equipment in remembrance. A
little wailing may help with senior staff, while cigarettes seem
to be preferred by staff carrying shovels.

Having dealt with the staff, small mention should be made
regarding actual funerals. If a dearly beloved is being
interred, do not pursue your birding within site of the event!
Doing so could result in serious physical injury, as funeral
goers do not seem to react well to a person with binoculars
staring in the direction of funeral and writing down things.
Keep in mind emotions are justifiably high. This means they can
outrun you.

Typically, most will cluck in dismay at the idea of bird
watching in a cemetery. You may be doing so now. Ah, but as
Halloween approaches and you’re dying for a new sighting, you
just might start to feel differently.

After all, where else will you be able to finally see Vladious
Vampirous in its natural habitat?

Rafting The River of No Return

March 23rd, 2008

Whitewater rafting is simply a blast, pun intended. This brings us to the river of no return, an excellent challenge in Idaho.

Idaho is an incredibly beautiful state, a place with no massive cities or the resulting urban sprawl that comes with them. It is a Rock Mountains state sitting on the border of Canada and part of Yellowstone National Park sits within its boundaries. With so much uninhibited nature, rafting opportunities are plentiful and all variety of categories of rapids can be found.

The Salmon River is located in the central area of Idaho and known as “The River of No Return.” If that doesn’t get your whitewater rafting juices flowing, nothing will!

The Salmon is 425 miles long and drains over 14,000 square miles of land. It drops a whopping 7,000 feet in elevation from its headwaters to its final merger with the Snake River. With an elevation drop like that, you just know the rafting is going to be good.

The top rafting area is on the middle fork of the Salmon River. The prime area is a 100 mile stretch running through the Frank Church - River of No Return wilderness area. This section cuts through the second deepest canyon in North America. It is makes for spectacular viewing and a hair raising adventure.

Constriction, elevation drops and plenty of obstructions make the middle fork a top rafting destination. Rapids fall in the category three and four range, making it an adrenaline rush without major risk. One and two day trips can be arranged for the middle fork and there are plenty of rafting companies offering services. Kayaking is also excellent, but you need to have mastered your rolling technique.

Taking on the river of no return is an absolutely blast that you will remember for years. Keep in mind it is a popular destination with over 10,000 people giving it a go each year. Enjoy!
