Host Country Dominates China Masters Badminton Tourney
September 29th, 2009When all the badminton sets have been contested, it was still host country China that dominated the China Masters Badminton Super Series tournament after Olympic gold medalist and world champion Lin Dan outlasted Thailand’s Boosak Ponsana in straight sets 21-17, 21-17.
The final four in this competition was almost an all-Chinese affair as three from the host country made it this far except for Ponsana who prevailed over his Chinese opponent in the semifinals to avoid an all-Chinese final.
The 40-minute final was filled with high quality badminton action as Lin, a three-time World Champion and Beijing Olympics gold medalist, outplayed Ponsana and it didn’t hurt to get the home crowd support as well.
The 26-year old Chinese sensation stated after the match that he’s happy with the victory and at the same time, clinched the title for the country.
As predicted, Lin encountered tournament top seed and world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the semifinals. However, the end result was an upset as Lin outplayed Chong Wei in all aspects of the game with his yonex badminton racket.
The victory brought by Lin for the country impressed Chinese head coach Li Yongbo who said that the gold medal win of the player was unexpected. He added that the five titles won by the Chinese team in the competition were beyond his expectation at all.
Yongbo added that he’s impressed by the performances of the young players which could be a good sign for the team at the 2012 London Olympics.
