Growth of Small Businesses to be Encouraged by New Glasgow Office Block

July 17th, 2009

An estimated $6.5m will be spent by the Glasgow City Council on a new technology hub, which would be located within the city limits. This centre would be named after the Scottish engineer John Logie Baird.

Small businesses and local entrepreneurs can move into the Innovation Village, which has a five-storey office space and IT space. The Village will open in the Bell Street cleaning depot of the council.

The European Regional Development Fund, GO Group, Glasgow City Council and the Merchant City Heritage Fund have come forward to fund the Innovation Village.

The project, thanks to the Merchant city Business and Arts Property Strategy of the City Council, has prior funds of up to $16m.

The focus of the new hub is on promoting the growth of new businesses. It will act as a launching pad for those working towards starting a business of their own. New companies can also avail the training facilities, office space, and desk space that will be on offer in the hub.

Isabell Majewsky, Chief Executive of the Go Group, cited Scottish history as a testament to the resourcefulness of Scottish people, and added that such resourcefulness is needed to start innovative businesses. He said that the area was named after John Logie Baird as Mr Baird embodied the spirit of innovation.

Majewsky added that the Village would play an important role in the growth of the economy in Glasgow, as it will give impetus to investors and innovators to bolster their businesses.
