How to Write an Uncommonly Good Article - Six Key Steps Part 1

June 28th, 2008

It is a well-known fact that writing good quality articles and placing them on the internet is a great method for getting exposure. Unfortunately, it is also a great method for exposing yourself in a manner that you would prefer not to.

As an avid writer and reader I spend a few minutes every day reading the thoughts of other contributors. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised. Often I am not.

I see the same mistakes made time after time.

Before I list six common errors let me tell you that I spent many years as a professional letter writer, editor, proof reader, report writer and speech writer. I have also penned eight books and have had many letters, articles and short stories published in countless newspapers, magazines and, of course, all over the internet.

If you want to check this for yourself you can look on any search engine and you will see my name come up all over the place. (Now I am really going to be under pressure to perform at the highest level.) Enough about my credentials.

Mistakes…

I am going to list some of the most annoying ones for a reader. Fixing them will definitely make your writing stronger. Here they are:

  1. I know this seems ridiculously obvious BUT please use the spell checker on your computer. It will not pick up every mistake but it will reveal obvious ones. That is a good start.

Too many spelling mistakes will destroy your credibility. People will wonder what other mistakes you make. That leads them to questioning the accuracy of your information.

  2. Space your writing into easy to read paragraphs. If you are the sort of writer who just starts at the top left hand corner of the page and finishes in the bottom right hand corner of the page then you need to stop doing that. Why? The main reason is that NOBODY will read it. Nothing is more confronting to a reader than a massive block of unbroken text.

See what I just did? The paragraph was getting too big. Lots of “white space” around short paragraphs is far easier to read. A dozen or so paragraphs is far easier to read than something that looks like some lawyer’s horrible legal document.

I used to place the pages at my feet, stand up, then view them for visual effect. If the paragraphs looked too chunky then I would create more “white space.” Eventually I was able to do this naturally from my desk.

  3. Keep your paragraphs to one key theme. Arrange them logically. That is, present one idea per paragraph and stick to it. If you want to say something else that is not in keeping with the theme then start a new paragraph.

Chopping and changing subjects within paragraphs makes your thoughts look jumbled. Do this and you will also lose readers. They will think they are playing a game of mental “snakes and ladders.”

  4. Use short sentences. Again, see what I did? That first sentence was only three words. The next was just five. This sentence is only six words.

Several short sentences with an occasional long sentence like this one will give variation. Short sentences are easily understood.

If you use very long sentences people will have to go back to re-read them to understand what you are saying. Is that what you want?

  5. Never use big or unusual words when shorter or more common words will do the same job.

Often people will use big words to impress their readers. Let me assure you - it is not impressive. You will lose readers.

Having said that - if a large word gives a specific meaning that no other word can then you should use it. Just don’t make people run for the lexicon too often. Sorry. I should have said dictionary. See what I mean?

  6. Proof read your article several times to ensure that it makes sense. A good method is to read it, make any necessary changes then come back to it later. Only when you are happy with your article should you submit it for publication.

To summarize:

  1. Use the spell checking facility on your computer
  2. Space your writing into paragraphs with sufficient “white space” around it
  3. Keep paragraphs within specific themes
  4. Short sentences are easier to understand
  5. Common words are easier to understand
  6. Proof read your work before submitting it.

If you adhere to these six key points your writing will improve and your readers will appreciate you for it.

Newborn Baby Clothes You’ll Need

June 24th, 2008

If you are gearing up to have a baby there should be several items that you’ve already or will have already bought for your newborn before he/she is born. You’ll need clothes, wipes, diapers, bathing accessories, a bathtub, etc. Are you prepared?

When many have a baby their only thought are those adorable baby outfits. But this is not the only baby clothes out there. There are all types of things to consider. When will you have your baby? If it is near the winter you’ll want warm sleepers, hats and gowns.

For the baby that’ll be born in the summer you’ll want plenty of onesies, especially those with short sleeves or no sleeves. Flip flops or open toe shoes are good and dresses for a little girl. By dresses I’m meaning sundresses, not anything fancy that’s going to make them sweat to death. Never underestimate the power of shorts, or a bathing suit. Remember if you plan on taking your baby out in the heat this summer, lather them up in sunscreen.

If you are religious you may want to purchase your child a Christening outfit. This is if one isn’t being passed down from one generation to the next. This should be the basic outfits you’ll need for a newborn.

Permanent Hair Removal Is A Good Idea.

June 24th, 2008

Many men and women seek measures to enhance their beauty. Hair removal is one of them, and permanent hair removal is one of the most popular choices. The traditional measures include shaving and waxing but those require frequent maintenance. Permanent hair removal carries many advantages. Inguinal hair for example, can be very painful when waxing, especially if utilizing Brazilian bikini. In this case, it may be a better idea to utilize permanent hair removal, which most women do not regret once done. Other body parts may require more thought when considering permanent hair removal, such as facial hair. Eyebrows for example may have different fashionable styles that vary with time and if hair is removed permanently, one may regret on the next fashion season.

On the other hand when well-utilized, permanent hair removal is very gratifying and time-effective. One may save at least four hours per month in a beauty salon for leg waxing if permanent hair removal has been done. In the busy lifestyles that we carry nowadays, it is a very attractive option offered by the beauty industry. Time is everything nowadays, and if that can be most effectively utilized hence better quality of life. Another way of seeing it is getting more for your money, especially on a life-time basis.

How To Find A Gift For The Person Who Already Has Everything

June 24th, 2008

As we all know Christmas will soon be here and we’ll all take some time to study our lists of names of the special people in our lives to whom we want to give a meaningful present to celebrate the holidays.

It seems there is always someone on the list who already “has everything.” This fact
presents quite a problem for most of us We feel we want the gift to be something
different, something he or she will cherish as being very special. Perhaps it will be a
sentimental gift, or one that can be used daily in a very practical way. Generally, we
may simply have no idea, no clue, as to what would be the appropriate gift.

So, the search begins. It could involve several hours of time-consuming shopping
in many different kinds of stores, in the malls, or perhaps a few hours spent
browsing through the pages of a number of mail order catalogs - all with the
objective of finding that very elusive - one right gift.

However, I’d like to suggest, the first place you should look is on that marvelous
new piece of technology that you probably already have right there in your own
home - your computer!

By the way, if you feel you are not “computer-literate” enough to do your Christmas
shopping on your computer, all you have to do is ask a nearby teenager for some
help. Teenage kids these days have literally grown up with computers. You’ll find
they love to demonstrate their computer know-how to anyone and everyone. Just
ask a teenager to show you how to shop on your computer and then step back and
watch and learn. It can be both fun and a life changing experience for you.

In addition, I’d like to tell you about a craft website (Crafty-Ones.com) that I found.
One that seems to be a made to order place where you can find unique gifts of
many kinds. Most of the items there are handmade. Included are such items as:
clothing for children and adults, wood carvings, jewelry, oil paintings, and
collectibles of many kinds. Fact is, there are many internet websites around beside
this one where you can find literally hundreds of craft items just made to help you
choose the one right “one-of-a-kind gift” for that special person on your Christmas
list.

While your are looking around the internet on your computer, I’m sure you will
discover one or more of those special, unique handmade or one-of-a kind craft
gifts you may belooking for. Perhaps, you’ll find so many gifts as you browse that
you’ll be able to complete ALL of your Christmas shopping without ever driving your
car or fighting holiday traffic to and from the malls and spending more and more
and more money for today’s very expensive gasoline. So, perhaps you can let this
be the year when just sit in front of your computer and - do your Christmas
shopping for crafty-type gifts right where you are, in the comfort or your own
home.

Small Business Owners - They Owe You The Money Why Don’t They Pay?

June 24th, 2008

Doesn’t it frustrate you when you’ve given good service, sometimes super service, and the customer doesn’t pay you?

Some of them aren’t doing too well and are struggling for cash, but, gee, so are you. In the time they take to pay they could have paid off a little each week and the debt would be gone.

You know others have the money but it takes them six months of sending them copy after copy of invoices, letters and telephone calls before they open their purse…

And often the worst are Government Departments and large businesses. You don’t want to lose sales to these customers but your cash-flow is hurting and you dropped your price to get the contract as well.

Is there any way to stop it?

Perhaps not completely, but there are ways to control the problem. Owners should have a clearly defined Rules of Credit which is known to staff and customers…and they should apply them consistently.

Many owners started off with some rules but over the years they have become lax at applying them. Customers and staff have become so used to breaking them that it’s as though there are no rules at all.

The minimum rules are:

  • Credit check for all new clients
  • Credit limit for all clients
  • Terms of payment 7 days, 30 days etc. Customers will have to negotiate a longer period.
  • Procedure for letters 1, 2 and 3.
  • Procedure for phone calls after letters.
  • Cash Sales only after limit is reached or deviation from payment policy.
  • Procedure for debt collection.

It doesn’t matter what the rules are, as long as your customers know them and know that you will apply them without favor.

You may need some help from your accountant to fine-tune the procedure and help with the letters and telephone script. http://www.profitstrategies4business.com

Free Yourself From Car Clutter: Five Easy Ways To Keep Your Car Organized When Traveling

June 20th, 2008

It’s a common sight: soda cans, gum wrappers, and snack bags
strewn all over the floor; books, magazines, and carrying cases
haphazardly placed on a seat; and miscellaneous papers and
trinkets shoved into any nook and cranny available. What is this
disorganized place? A college frat house, a mad scientist’s
office? No. It’s the typical disorganized car–and it could
easily belong to you or someone you know. Whether you’re
traveling for business or pleasure, the automobile is still the
most common means of getting to your destination. In fact, for
many people, their car has become their “home away from home,”
with extended car trips a part of daily life.

To avoid traveling in a perpetual mess, do a little pre-planning.
Before your next road trip, take time to totally clear out your
vehicle. Don’t forget about the glove box and side door
compartments. By the time you’re done, you want your car totally
empty–just like how you received it from the dealer. Now that
you’re car is empty, it’s time to stock it and organize it for
stress-free travel. Here are five easy tips to get you started
and to keep your car organized when traveling:

1. Stock the glove box and side pockets with necessities.
Contrary to popular use, your glove box is not a “catch-all
compartment” or a trash can. It’s a place to store traveling
essentials. For day-to-day use, simply keeping important car
documents (like your insurance and registration cards), a pen or
pencil, a pocket-sized notepad, and a small first-aid kit is
sufficient. For travel purposes, you’ll want to beef that list up
a bit. Include maps, directions, extra sunglasses, a camera and
film, reading material for passengers, and a few small trash
bags. Remember, the purpose of your glove box and side door
compartments is to keep essentials at hand during a trip, so you
don’t have to keep pulling over to open the trunk.

2. If you’re traveling with children, let each child pack a
small backpack or travel bag. In it they should put things they
can do on the road–a walkman and tapes, comic books, handheld
video games, etc. Keep the bag near the child, either on the
floor of the back seat or on the seat itself, so they can easily
retrieve their items and put them away when done. A small bag of
items takes up less room and produces less clutter than five or
six individual items strewn in the back.

Server Error in “Application”-Application Error When Using Access Database With NET Framework

June 19th, 2008

I had an application that I was working where the client insisted on using an Access database for the application. The application was running on a two node server farm so the Access database had to be located on a seperated machine and accessed over the network. When upgrading the server farm from 2000 to 2003 the client ran into an issue accessing the database.

After checking to make sure it wasn’t an error with the connection to the location where the database was held I attempted to put the database underneath the site and connect to it there. Well that connection worked fine and the data could be accessed.

Long story short after some research and some long hours on this I found that the issue was a combination of things. First under IIS 6 all applications are run under application pools. The application pools do not pass the identity along that they run under. This creates a problem when trying to access a remote drive. To solve this issue you can enable impersonation of the account that you had IIS to run as the anonymous user. To do this you need to open the web.config file of your application. Under the and then insert a line that is similar to this:

< IDENTITY impersonate=""true"/" >

This line should be used if you wish to impersonate the user as the account that the user is logged in as on their desktop.

or

< IDENTITY impersonate=""true"" userName=""< your" user name >” password=”< USER account password > “/>

This line should be used if you want to specify one specific account to impersonate.

After I turned on the impersonation in my project another issue appeared. I got the dreded /< YOUR name application > Application Error. This issue was addressed in Microsoft KB82719 Article.

When a .NET application executes it uses the TEMP folder of the ASPNET user, or whatever user you have specified to run your .NET applications, to run and store temporary files. When you run an Access database/application temporary files are opened but since you are impersonating a user that user does not have access to open these files under the ASPNET temp directory. The solution for this is simple, go into the file structure and grant the account access to the temp folder in C:Document settingsServerNameASPNETlocal settings folder. Only give the account access to the Temp folder so that a security risk is not created.
